Matha Roti is a humble little Indian restaurant located in Harbord Village. This restaurant is nearby to the University of Toronto, providing an alternative dining option for nearby college students. It’s not too far from Central Yonge, either, which makes it a great destination for people working in the downtown area.

This restaurant is not the biggest, but it is comfortable. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed, while the decor provides a fun dining atmosphere with its bright colours. Matha is a great spot for a quick lunch or dinner, as well as for meeting up with friends.

The menu is short but sweet. It has all the favourites- butter chicken, lamb biryani, and samosa. Everything is colourfully laid out, with accurate descriptions, making it easy for customers to make decisions.
The roti here is their specialty. All the roti here is lovely: soft and tender with just the right amount of chewiness. The balance of textures is very satisfying.
A classic is their saag paneer roti ($12.50), which is homemade spinach, cheese, and spices wrapped in a flour tortilla. Each bite is full of flavour and you will never tire of the semi-sweet taste.

The butter chicken here ($13.95) is also excellent, both in roti and on its own. The chicken is tender and succulent; the sauce is thick with a nice blend of spices, and it’s all very reasonably priced for the quality. Everything from the chicken to the rice is incredibly flavourful.

An honourable mention is the samosa chaat ($6.95), which is a bowl of samosa topped with chickpeas, onions, tomato, yogurt, tamarind, and mint sauce. Once you have a mouthful of this, you will notice the unique and complex flavours combining to make a truly delicious dish. Furthermore, I find it a great option for vegetarians! It is a great dish for sharing or to have on its own if you are looking for something light.
If you’re looking for a great Indian restaurant in Toronto, Matha Roti should be at the top of your list. This is undoubtedly one of the best roti places in town. The prices are reasonable and the food is absolutely delicious! Make sure to try the samosa chaat for a treat!
