Saravanaa Bhavan is a long-running international chain serving up South Indian vegetarian dishes, including dosas. Founded in Madras in 1981, the restaurant has been expanding all over India and internationally for decades now. The menu has changed little over time but each dish contains a hint of south Indian goodness that keeps people coming back for more.

The restaurant features simple decor and a friendly, family environment. On the walls hang small paintings, which add to the south Indian atmosphere. The restaurant is quite spacious with plenty of seating to accommodate families and large groups.

The menu is extensive, offering several different types of South Indian dishes, including dosa, idly (steamed cakes), rice dishes, and different bread dishes as well. However, they are best known for their dosa, which is served with different types of fillings. Best of all, all their dosas are served with three chutney and sambar.
A favourite is the rava masala dosa ($10.49) which is stuffed with potatoes and onions. It is topped with a typical south Indian gravy made of ground spices, tamarind, cumin, peanuts, tomatoes, thyme, fennel seeds among others. This light dish tastes great with the chutneys that are offered at the counter.

If you’re looking for something with a bit more heat, definitely give their kara masala dosa a try($10.99) which is filled with onions, potatoes and “spicy” sauce. This dish comes with a very generous portion of chutney which adds the right amount of heat to the south Indian flavours.

As for drinks, they have many options but their signature madras coffee ($2.75) is an absolute must-try. The coffee is sweetened with condensed milk and cardamom, adding a wonderful fragrance to the drink and its foamy top gives it a nice presentation.
The restaurant has been in business for over 30 years and its menu is still growing. There are locations worldwide and each one of them is filled with customers at all hours of the day. So if you’re looking to eat some authentic South Indian food, make your way to Saravanaa Bhavan and enjoy their delicious food.
